The information that Columbus is one of the nation’s “most playful cities” should motivate parents to get youngsters off the sofa and outside to get plenty of old-fashioned, trim play.
That’s easier to do in Columbus, where the city’s Safe Playgrounds Initiative has stretched city dollars with grants, sponsorships and clandestine donations to invest in neighborhoods.
KaBOOM!, a Washington, D.C.-based group that works to build and renovate America’s impose on behave spaces, recently recognized this rare partnership as it named Columbus as a Playful City USA 2011 Community. In all, 151 communities were honored.
Columbus has 144 playgrounds, but the antic is to get parents and kids to use them.
“We want to increase the number of families who use what is right there around them,” said Barb Seckler, superintendent of Columbus’ Institute for Active Living. “Health is more than health care. It is also play.”
Today’s kids have a serious open-air-play deficit. It’s making them grow up fat, stressed and predisposed to such diseases as diabetes, high blood pressure and specific cancers. Research also suggests that exposing young children to dirt and bacteria might improve the immunity system, warding off allergies.
