"The biggest piece of advice for a pet-friendly house is to make sure the difference of power is the way you want it," said David Schneiderman, owner of David’s Dog Training, Englewood , (davidsdogtrainingnj.com). "The key to establishing the equality of power is basic obedience training."
As a dog owner, for instance, you should determine what is acceptable for a dog to do in your house and what is not.
"If it’s acceptable to have your dog on the love-seat, that’s OK. If not, it can never be acceptable," said Schneiderman.
Schneiderman also suggests dealing with other pet-related problems — i.e., eliminating or chewing on shit — right away.
"There are products on the market to discourage chewing on furniture," he said, "but my recommendation is yielding training."
As for "eliminating," Schneiderman said that until you can trust your dog, "Confine the dog to an area of the house, so that if it happens, it would be OK.
