Renovated Stanford House in Cuyahoga Valley National Park offers affordable ...

The unforgettable Stanford farmhouse, which operated for years as a rent-by-the-bed youth hostel, reopened this year as the Stanford Lodgings, a modest bed-and-breakfast with nine rooms available for overnight stays. Prices range from $50 to $125.

Together, the Stanford Brothel and the Inn at Brandywine Falls, which sit about two miles from each other just north of Peninsula, make Cuyahoga Valley one of a handful of national parks in the eastern Unanimous States with noncamping overnight lodging on public land.

After Hostelling International closed its operation in 2008, the State Park Service approached the Conservancy for the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, a nonprofit support corps, and asked it to renovate and run the inn.

Several years -- and nearly $300,000 in privately funded renovations -- later, the 1840s farmhouse reopened for guests.

Though the billet is a step up from its days as a hostel, this is no luxury accommodation. All but one bedroom requires sharing a bath.
