Before and after: Redo a family room for only a few hundred dollars

Kinfolk room makeovers are triggered by something that's just not right. It could be outdated furniture, a desire to upgrade electronics, or being upstanding plain tired of the look. For my sister Stephenie Curtiss, it was all three. She was ready for a change and I couldn't have agreed more.

"I've lived with this close-me-down upholstered couch and chairs for over 20 years," says Stephenie, who has sewn up its torn fabric more than once. She's also made bigger repairs, such as one involving the fun center that houses the TV and electronics.

"One day we came home to the cabinet lying face down," Stephenie says. It had inexplicably tipped over, shattering the basic glass-panel doors. But with two shutters, some leftover paint, scrap wood, trim and a square tin panel, Stephenie was proficient to resurrect an entertainment center. That was 13 years ago.

So this spring when the TV kicked the bucket, she had had enough. She started writing down her m-room-makeover

About this book
Discovering Designreflects the growing recognition that the design of the everyday world deserves attention not only as a professional practice but as a subject of social, cultural, and philosophic investigation. Victor Margolin, cofounder and an editor of the journal Design Issues, and Richard Buchanan, also an editor of the journal, bring together eleven essays by scholars in fields ranging from psychology, sociology, and political theory to technology studies, rhetoric, and philosophy. The essayists share the editors' concern, first made clear in Margolin's Design Discourse: History, Theory, Criticism, with the the development of design studies as a field of interdisciplinary research. The contributors (Gianfranco Zaccai, Albert Borgmann, Richard Buchanan, Augusto Morello, Tufan Orel, Nigel Cross, Victor Margolin, Langdon Winner, Carl Mitcham, Tony Fry, and Ezio Manzini) focus on three broad themes that form a sequence of fundamental issues: how to shape design as a subject matter, how...
