A connected of mine, a sensitive young man of artistic leanings who often sports multi-zipped trousers in citrus shades, is currently walking from Turf’s End to John o’Groats, to collect, I gather, his thoughts. (This is the opposite to how I lead my life, for I prefer to stay seated indoors in a sombre skirt with buttons and keep my thoughts as far apart from each other as possible so they don’t gang up against me.) My relation doesn’t carry his belongings in a knotted kerchief on a stand by but he strikes a pastoral figure, nonetheless, with his rucksack. A one-man Wordsworth poem on legs, only with a better sense of spirits and more city-smarts.
Tall and handsome, but lacking the vanity that usually goes with those attributes, as he journeys he spends his nights kipping on the sofas of strangers. This is not as free an arrangement as it sounds. He does not linger, pale and hopeful, in village squares at closing time, nor prop himself against lampposts in the moonlight with a mournful take-me-home air. No, he has turned to an organisation called Couch Surfing, which provides a network of people who are happy to suit guests in their homes, for free, as they “journey through life”. More than five million weary travellers the clique over have laid their hats and heads on the kindness of strangers through this scheme. The idea is that loafing on another’s sofa will give you a true soup of the environment you visit. Friendships will sprout up over the antimacassars. Promoting fun, the practice of gratitude and furthering interpersonal relationships, the organisation’s maximum mission is to “create a better world, one couch at a time”. Isn’t that fine? Eat your heart out psychoanalysis.

The couch, my wife and I have at home is aesthitically attractive, but very uncomfortable to sit for long periods of time.
