Forum İstanbul hosts photographic journey of 2010

Speaking at the crowded initiation reception on Tuesday evening, the Dutch consul general in İstanbul, Onno Kervers, described the charming collection as a “breathtaking rollercoaster of human emotions encompassing the glamour of showbiz, the beauty of class, the horrors of war, the cruelty of mankind, the fascination of sports and the humdrum reality of daily life.”

Divided into 13 categories, this year's match saw a total of 108,059 photos from 5,691 photographers of 125 nationalities considered by a panel of 19 foreign photography experts chaired by American photographer David Burnett. The overall victor of the event was South African photographer Jodi Bieber, who was praised by the jury panel for capturing the through combination of horrific and beautiful with her poignant portrait of an 18-year-old Afghan woman who was brutally ruined by her husband after she attempted to flee her abusive marriage.

Present at the opening reception was Italian photographer Riccardo Venturi, whose remarkable black-and-white image of a child standing motionless against a desolate backdrop of an old 19th-century iron market ardent in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, won first prize in the Singles General News category.
