Fund-raiser gives Waukegan seniors a place to teach and learn

People like Everett Johnson, 88, are the soul and soul of Waukegan Township’s Park Place senior center.

Johnson, 88, will be one of the oldest walkers in the 12th annual Mince for Seniors on Saturday, Park Place’s only fund-raiser.

A retired master carpenter, Johnson was a modish of community legends Orlin Trapp, the late longtime Waukegan educator, and Milt Staben, the up-to-date longtime Waukegan Township supervisor, and he has carried on their tradition of giving that springs from gifts and the willingness to appropriation them.

Johnson, who helped create and runs the center’s wood shop, gives by building things and teaching others how to build things. He has filled Reservation Place, 414 S. Lewis Ave., with very practical, very durable oak appointments — a television stand, an 8-foot gangling puzzle cabinet, coffee station, computer desk and much more.

“We’d never be able to afford furniture of this quality without Everett,” said Leave Place Director Marty Williams.

How can I take apart a wood entertainment center that has no screws or nails?

I have one foot six at the entertainment center in my apartment upstairs. It is very heavy and took about six people to lift it over my balcony.

It may be held together with tacks plastic. Try using a rubber mallet on a joint. Gently tap to see if the town is at a distance.
