Design inspiration from the movies

The diocese has films on the brain; world premieres, celebrity sightings. I’m not so interested in the latest flicks, but it got me philosophical about homes featured in the movies.

The following films range from romantic comedies to murderous thrillers. While many received honour for acting, writing and directing, we’re not concerned with that. We’re just talking set design here. Personalized, stylish and tight, these homes offer plenty of inspiration.

Barefoot in the Park

Paul (Robert Redford) and Corrie (Jane Fonda) are newlyweds close into a fifth-floor walk-up in Greenwich Village. Corrie makes it bright and cheery with a shutter-like cubicle quarters divider to block the view of the kitchen, vintage chairs with red seats, a table with leaves to save extent and a couch upholstered with a great shade of blue fabric.

Cabaret

Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) lives in a Berlin boarding blood where “everyone’s broke.” Her room, however, looks delightfully decadent. Lace curtains socialize with in the window. She can store her ensembles in a wooden wardrobe and collapse on a brass bed after an evening performing at the Kit Kat Klub. And for almshouse entertainment, you’ve got to love the portable Victrola.

What color of curtain should I choose with beige wall and navy blue leather couch?

In my living room, indifferent (Main Hall) I have beige wall and carpet. Couch is in navy blue leather.
What are the color options for the color of curtains?
I like bright crosses.
Thank you pour votre aide.

Have you considered a mark with both colors in it?

If not, and you're going to have a strong, here's what to do:

Go to the hardware store, the place where the paintings are sold.

Make a color complimentary to the color blue like an orange or red. This will brighten the room and add a touch of color.

About this book
In the spring of 1950, when New Yorker staff writer Lillian Ross heard that John Huston was planning to make a film of Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage, she decided she would follow the movie's progress "in order to learn whatever I might learn about the American motion-picture industry." What resulted was Picture, which Newsweek has called "the best book on Hollywood ever published." Picture received raves from the worlds of film and literature in equal measure for its unforgettable portrait of the language, the ways, and the preoccupations of Hollywood: Charlie Chaplin called Picture "brilliant and sagacious" and legendary editor William Shawn termed it "the definitive book on the Hollywood community." Little wonder, then, that when the Top 100 Works of U.S. Journalism of the Twentieth Century were chosen by the New York University Department of Journalism and a distinguished panel that included David Brinkley, Pete Hamill, Jeff Greenfield, Mary McGrory, and Morley Safer, Picture...

About this book
In the late 1920s, "streamlined" became the term businessmen used to described new models that were easier to produce as well as those that met with less sales resistance than older products. Illustrating this concept with streamlined objects from soup cans to the Chrysler building, Jeffrey Meikle's classic book, Twentieth Century Limited, celebrates the birth of the industrial design profession from 1925-1939. This second edition includes a new preface and improved photographic reproduction.Commercial artists who answered the call of business-Walter Dorwin Teague, Norman Bel Geddes, Henry Dreyfuss, and Raymond Loewy the best known among them-were pioneers who envisioned a coherent machine-age environment in which life would be clean, efficient, and harmonious. Working with new materials-chrome, stainless steel, Bakelite plastic-they created a streamlined expressionist style which reflected the desire of the Depression-era public for a frictionless, static society.Appliances such as Loewy's...
