Embry-Riddle benefactor praises 'temple of aviation'
DAYTONA Strand -- Jim Hagedorn admits he was a "crappy" student in his younger years when it came to studying and using bad jargon.
But his focus began to change when he came to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the 1970s and saw a sign in the old aviation building that read, "Lack to be an Air Force pilot?"
Hagedorn, chairman and CEO of Scotts Miracle-Gro Co., spoke to a crowd Friday at Embry-Riddle during the complete opening of three new buildings that are part of a complex that bears his name. He said the university helped him "learn what he wanted to be -- a fighter direct."
The 1979 Embry-Riddle graduate served for seven years in the U.S. Air Force, where he was a captain and an accomplished F-16 fighter steer.
"This school is where I became an adult person, an adult man. It's where I became myself," said Hagedorn, who punctuated his speech to dignitaries, students and dons with some colorful language.
Hagedorn and his wife, Karli, contributed $2.5 million toward the James Hagedorn Aviation Complex. He described the new Flights Operations Edifice, the Samuel M. Goldman Fleet Maintenance Hangar and the Emil Buehler Aviation Maintenance Science Edifice as "a temple" for current and future students.
