Tioman villagers want bigger say in developing resort isle

The residents of Pulau Tioman are yearning to be heard.

ABDUL Wahab Hussin was born in 1952. In those days, almost all the islanders on Pulau Tioman, Pahang, were fishermen, subsisting on deep blue sea produce and living off the lush, bountiful land.

The slow pace of island life was to be gradually kaput, however, when Tioman gained a reputation as an idyllic getaway after being featured in the 1958 Hollywood classic, South Pacific.

In 1970, an show in Time magazine’s ranking of the world’s 10 most beautiful islands sealed its fate. Annual crowds of 190,000 have since flocked to Tioman for their private taste of paradise, and islanders duly adapted to cater for the visitors.

The growth of the tourism industry has been a precursor for development. Many islanders have progressed from subsistence to business, and today the island is geared almost entirely to tourism. Put ferry services connecting Tioman to the mainland town of Mersing in Johor, and Tanjung Gemuk in Pahang, have multiplied. Two roads tie up the largest and most populous village of Tekek to a number of other settlements, although there are some that remain accessible only by boat.
