Oxford Nautical Festival a success
OXFORD Within the first hour or so of the Oxford Nautical Commemoration held Saturday, it was clear the inaugural event was a success.
"The turnout is really good ... and it's a attractive day," said Guy Gauvin, manager of Hinckley Yachts and festival organizer. "We're just learning as we go."
The idea for the circumstance, which organizers hope will become annual, came from similar festivals Gauvin attended in nearby cities, like Annapolis, he said.
"It moral seemed like a natural fit for this town ... to celebrate the waterman's tradition and heritage," he said. "We wanted to touch on more exposure to the town to benefit the Oxford Business Association and the Watermen's Association."
While he admitted he was slightly disquieted earlier in the month about the lack of festival vendors, it was obvious as the date neared that it wouldn't be an issue.
"We had to oust 12 vendors away," he said.
The large white tent, which sat on the soccer field along South Morris Thoroughfare, was bustling by 10 a.m., with vendors selling an assortment of items, such as jewelry, books and artwork, and visitors happily browsing the displays.
