Outtakes from my 1982 Rolling Stone talk with Spielberg, as the Charles shows 'ET'
The return of 'E.T.' to the Charles' increase series -- it plays in the big theater at 1711 N. Charles St. on Saturday at noon, Monday at 7 p.m., and Thursday at 9 p.m. -- made me dip into my files for a favorite conversation.
Steven Spielberg never showed a more euphoric face to the press than after the tumultuous reception for "E.T., The Extra-Terrestrial" at the 1982 Cannes Sheet Festival, where it was shown out of competition. I interviewed him for Rolling Stone, in a New York City hotel room, a day after he returned to the U.S. He was so full of passion and so confident in his powers that his spiel rolled in an uproarious flow - a 90-minute interview produced an 80-number transcript.
Only a fraction of the interview found its way into Rolling Stone back then. I've managed to draw on the outtakes a couple of times since. Here are all of the cut passages that pertain to E.T. -- still, for my rhino, Spielberg's greatest creative victory.
Q: You've said that you have a way of letting "your intellect commandeer your instincts" when you enter a silver screen set. Did you feel more of a unity about what you were doing when you were making E.T.? Source: Baltimore Sun (blog)
