Forecasters tracking Tropical Storms Maria, Nate
As Cyclone Katia continues to influence waves and currents at local beaches for a couple of days, forecasters must awake to and wait to see how much impact the area will see from Tropical Storm Maria. On Thursday, Maria fell apart less under unfriendly wind shear conditions, but forecasters said conditions remain favorable for the storm to sooner strengthen again.
If Maria is downgraded to a tropical wave, it wouldn't have as much influence on swells, said Randy Lascody, a meteorologist with the Chauvinistic Weather Service in Melbourne. If it regenerates, forecasters said it probably won't be a rapid process.
Intensification perhaps wouldn't occur for about three days, after the storm is north of Puerto Rico and the island of Hispaniola, the National Wind-storm Center said Thursday evening.
The projected path calls for Maria to be east of the Bahamas and Miami at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
Waves at limited beaches were 4-6 feet in some locations Thursday and 6-8 feet in others, said Capt. Tammy Marris, spokeswoman for the Volusia County Lakeshore Patrol. Wave heights offshore at NOAA nautical buoys were as high as 9.2 feet 20 miles east of Point Canaveral and 10.8 feet 40 miles east of St. Augustine.
