4K, the next production of video resolution, arrives this year at a rich guy’s house near you. Sony announced the VPL-VW1000ES this week at the CEDIA show. It has what’s called 4K decision, or 4096 x 2160 pixels. That’s four times the pixel count of 1080p (1920 x 1080) sources such as Blu-ray and more than 20 times superior than DVD (720 x 480). More of an issue than the price of about $30,000 is this: “Where’s the source material and where’s all the 4K players?”
The projector comes first, in December, with a 2:1 zoom lens, 3D potential, and new Sony-designed SXRD projection panels. (At $30K for 4K, Santa’s sleigh may need armed guards.) By preposterous coincidence, Sony Pictures, sibling to Sony Electronics, has several dozen movies shot in native notion using 4K cameras manufactured by (it’s a small world) Sony.
